Assessing the Risks Associated with the Canadian Railway System Using a Safety Risk Model Approach

Canada’s national rail network plays a vital role in moving goods and people, transferring $320 billion worth of over 100 million passengers annually. Severe train occurrences are rare events. But they have the potential to cause fatalities injuries, as well environmental property damage. Recent severe incidents, such Burlington 2012 Lac-Mégantic 2013, shown that there is still need for increased awareness enhanced risk assessment. This work focuses on assessment Canadian railway system using Safety Risk Model (SRM). The study applied customized SRM (C-SRM) two groups hazardous events: main-track derailments collisions with fatality injury consequences, calibrated data between 2007 2017. model used Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) Event (ETA) identify risks individual events were then evaluated three people: passengers, employees, members public (MOP). Finally, effectiveness introducing new control measure, Enhanced Train Control (ETC), was assessed. results showed collective higher than collisions. Moreover, MOP employees form most significant proportion risk. reduction analysis ETC revealed developing this reduced measure thus has make railways safer.
